Conclusion
Cleopatra might have lived a short lifeâshe was only a year away from turning forty by the time she diedâbut her story has lived throughout the years. Her legendary meeting with Julius Caesar and her grand entrance in Tarsus were immortalized in both history pieces and the entertainment world. But who exactly was the queen? Was she really the seductive queen who cared about nothing but her shiny golden throne and power? In the eyes of the Romans, she would forever go down in history as the immoral foreigner who corrupted Romeâs greatest figures. Even today, it is hard to distinguish between fact and fiction, as the real truth about her has mostly been lost in time.
What we do know about her is that Cleopatra was indeed a prominent ruler with the mind of an intellectual. She rose to the throne while she was just a young teenager, and she managed to hold her power in place for slightly over two decades. If it were not for her wits and strategies, ancient Egypt would have continued to plummet under the reign of her brother, and the land likely would have been conquered by another powerful force before the year of her death, 30 BCE.
The queen was misunderstood for thousands of years. Her stories were written inaccurately, and her glorious achievements were smothered by the Romans, who replaced them with vile depictions of her. Ancient philosophers threw hate on her even though they had never seen her in person. Even today, we do not know where Cleopatra and Antony were buried, although it is hoped that it will be discovered soon. Josephus, a Roman-Jewish historian, slandered her in his huge collection of stories. Cassius Dio blamed her for Antonyâs demise.
But was everything actually her fault? Antony was the one who led his legions to a great defeat in Parthia, yet Cleopatra was the one to blame, as it was said that the Roman general thought about nothing but the queen until he lost his focus. Plutarch added myths about her, but at the very least, he did acknowledge her intelligence and wits.
Cleopatra had four children, and all of them came from her relationships with powerful figures in history. However, the world was already beginning to shift into a new era before her children could even stand up for their mother. Their lives were completely different after her death. Their royal status was stripped, and some of them were even paraded in chains after Egyptâs defeat. And unfortunately, no known descendants of Cleopatra have lived today.
Despite the tragedies she endured, Cleopatra still deserves to be glorified in our world as one of the greatest rulers of all time, alongside some of the other female pharaohs who thrived long before her birth. Cleopatra should be remembered not strictly as a glamorous royal with beauty. She was a mother, a leader, and a loyal lover. She was not a sex symbol, for we can only conclusively prove that she had two lovers, and she stayed true to them until the end of their lives.
